Fun Friday Fact: Vein of Love

January 11th, 2013
Wedding rings are often placed on the ring finger of the left hand because ancient Egyptians believed the vein in that hand (which the Romans called the “vein of love”) ran directly to the heart!

Vena amoris is a Latin name meaning, literally, “vein of love”. Traditional belief established that this vein ran directly from the heart to the fourth finger of the left hand. This theory has been cited in western cultures as one of the reasons the engagement ring and/or wedding ring was placed on the fourth finger, or “ring finger“.

This tradition was later assimilated by the Greeks, after Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in 332 BC. Up to this time betrothal rings were generally made out of hemp, leather, bone, or ivory. In early Rome the use of metal rings gradually began to take over from these materials, and the metal of choice back then was iron. Gold and silver rings were given on rare occasions, to prove that a man trusted his wife with his valuable property.

Fun Friday Fact: Flower girls traditionally threw flower petals in the bride’s path to lead her to a sweet, plentiful future!

December 27th, 2012

Flower girls are the cute girls at the head of the wedding procession.  They spread petals down the aisle for the bride to walk on flowers.   The flowers the girls carry or strew about symbolize fertility and hope.

Others say that in the early times the bride and groom were made to wear flowers to ward off evil spirits.  Either way, the beauty of flowers and the cuteness of flower girls add cheer to the wedding festivities.

Nowadays, one will see the changing face of the flower girl.  Some girls do not strew flower petals on the way to altar.  Some flower girls carry a small bouquet or a basket of flowers instead.

Some flower girls cannot be technically called flower girls because they don’t have flowers.  Some strew confetti down the aisle.  Some blow bubbles.

Choosing a Flower Girl is an important decision. Some couples choose a bigger girl instead of a smaller one, but substitutes as a junior bridesmaid instead of being a flower girl.  There are weddings when smaller girls are put into wagons and these are rolled down the aisle.

Other couples with significant (trained) pets in their lives may also be included in the entourage as a flower pet or ring bearer pet.

Happy Friday!!

Getting Married in 2013?? Think GREEN!!!…It’s the color of the Year!

December 20th, 2012

{PANTONE Color of the Year}: Emerald 17-5641

Did you hear the great news? Pantone just announced their 2013 Color of the Year! PANTONE® Emerald 17-5641, a lively, radiant, lush green, has just been named the Color of the Year for 2013! So exciting, right? Most often associated with brilliant, precious gemstones, the perception of Emerald is sophisticated and luxurious. For ages, this luminous, magnificent hue has been the color of beauty and new life in many cultures and religions. It’s also the color of growth, renewal and prosperity – no other color conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity.
Want to know what I think about their choice? Bring on the Emerald, I say! And lots of it! Green has recently become one of the newest ”it” colors for weddings. And there’s definitely a reason why. Emerald is absolutely gorgeous! Plus did you know that the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum? Pretty crazy, right? Personally, I love how this shade sparkles and shines! I suggest pairing it with antique gold to create a vintage feel. Going for more of a preppy vibe? Emerald pairs effortlessly with Navy Blue!
Today I’m sharing an Emerald palette made for Winter weddings! I went with a classic palette of emerald and snowy white. I don’t know about you, but I’m absolutely in love with those green Fendi heels! Anyone else? So tell me… what do you think about Pantone’s choice for the 2013 color of the year? Are you inspired? Can you imagine yourself incorporating it into your wardrobe? Your home decor? Or even your wedding day color palettes? If you said yes to any of those – I want to hear from you! Tell me what you love about Emerald!
